{"id":8614,"date":"2019-05-07T21:10:33","date_gmt":"2019-05-07T21:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8614"},"modified":"2019-05-07T21:10:35","modified_gmt":"2019-05-07T21:10:35","slug":"bike-to-school-day-2019-encourages-active-transportation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/bike-to-school-day-2019-encourages-active-transportation\/","title":{"rendered":"Bike to School Day 2019 encourages active transportation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools, cities, law enforcement agencies, parents and\ntraffic safety partners across the United States are putting on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkbiketoschool.org\/\">Bike to School\nDay<\/a> events on May 8 to encourage active transportation to and from\nschool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bike to School Day first started in 2012 as a way for\nschools to emphasize the importance of safe routes for students and the\nbenefits of bicycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In California, the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is asking\nthe public to be mindful of activities near and around schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are many ways to get around other than a car, and\nriding a bicycle is how many students in California travel to school,\u201d said OTS\nDirector Rhonda Craft. \u201cBike to School Day is a great way for communities to\nhighlight something active, fun and viable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OTS provides the following tips for parents and caregivers\nto educate their children on ways they can stay safe biking to school:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure they are always wearing a properly fitted helmet.\nHelmets are required for all riders under 18.<\/li><li>Test them on traffic rules, like stopping at stop signs and hand\nsignals for turns.<\/li><li>Your child should ride on a sidewalk if they can, or in the same\ndirection as traffic as far to the right as possible.<\/li><li>Emphasize the importance of avoiding distractions, like using a\nphone or wearing earbuds.<\/li><li>With an increased presence of children on bikes, drivers should\nuse extra caution around schools.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drivers are urged to follow best safety practices like\nstopping at stop signs, yielding to children crossing the street, not driving\ndistracted and allowing at least three feet of space when passing a bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkbiketoschool.org\/registration\/whosbiking.php\">See which\nschools are registered<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Schools, cities, law enforcement agencies, parents and traffic safety partners across the United States are putting on Bike to School Day events on May 8 to encourage active transportation to and from school.
