{"id":8626,"date":"2019-05-09T20:57:48","date_gmt":"2019-05-09T20:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8626"},"modified":"2019-05-09T20:57:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-09T20:57:49","slug":"aaa-carolinas-commends-lawmakers-as-distracted-driving-bill-passes-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/aaa-carolinas-commends-lawmakers-as-distracted-driving-bill-passes-house\/","title":{"rendered":"AAA Carolinas commends lawmakers as distracted driving bill passes House"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/BillLookUp\/2019\/h144\">House Bill 144<\/a>,&nbsp;titled\n\u201cHands-Free NC\u201d, has passed out of the North Carolina House committee with a\n92-23 vote and now heads to the Senate for consideration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although a long way off becoming law, AAA Carolinas has commended\nlawmakers for addressing the need to combat distracted driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are encouraged to see this bill passing the House with\nsuch strong bi-partisan support,\u201d said Tiffany Wright, President of AAA\nCarolinas Foundation for Traffic Safety. \u201cThere\u2019s still plenty of work to be\ndone to strengthen the bill and we hope lawmakers will continue to work on this\nimportant legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Bill 144 has been amended to prohibit distracted\ndriving behind the wheel including hand-held electronic devices and cell\nphones. The House passed the bill through to the Senate on the notion that the\nSenate work to re-word the bill and perhaps strengthen its penalties. Currently\nthere are no points for violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe would like to thank the four bill sponsors who have worked very hard to move this bill forward: Reps. Kevin Corbin (R-Macon), John Torbett (R-Gaston), Jon Hardister (R-Guilford) and Garland Pierce (D-Scotland), plus the 42 co-sponsors of the bill,\u201d added Wright. \u201cWe urge the Senate to strongly consider this legislation which has the potential to save lives. \u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently 18 states and Washington D.C. have a hands-free law and Tennessee is close to becoming the 19th state, as it awaits the governor\u2019s signature. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House Bill 144,&nbsp;titled \u201cHands-Free NC\u201d, has passed out of the North Carolina House committee with a 92-23 vote and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
