{"id":8822,"date":"2019-07-09T17:25:59","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T17:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8822"},"modified":"2019-07-09T17:25:59","modified_gmt":"2019-07-09T17:25:59","slug":"rise-in-pedestrian-deaths-on-western-australian-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/rise-in-pedestrian-deaths-on-western-australian-roads\/","title":{"rendered":"Rise in pedestrian deaths on Western Australian roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The number of pedestrians killed on Western Australian roads has nearly doubled compared to this time last year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rac.com.au\/\">The RAC<\/a> is urging road users to pay extra attention to their surroundings after new figures reveal 11 pedestrians were killed on roads in the state between January and May this year \u2013 up from six fatalities over the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith WA consistently having one of the worst road safety records in the country, and with deaths and serious injuries occurring nearly every day, it\u2019s never been more important to prioritise safety above all else,\u201d said RAC General Manager of Corporate Affairs Will Golsby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDistraction and inattention pose serious risks to all road users, so we\u2019d urge everyone to look up and focus on the safety of those around them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RAC\u2019s safety tips for pedestrians:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always check for oncoming traffic<\/li>\n<li>Where possible, cross at designated pedestrian crossings \u2013 the Road Traffic Code states that if one is available within 20 metres you must use it<\/li>\n<li>If you cannot cross at a designated crossing, take steps to ensure you can be seen by drivers (e.g. cross in well-lit locations, avoid crossing between parked cars or queuing traffic, or near a curve in the road)<\/li>\n<li>Motorists must give way to pedestrians already crossing the road they are turning into, but don\u2019t assume they will<\/li>\n<li>Take extra care when walking on or around the road if you have been consuming alcohol, medication or other substances \u2013 these may impair your reaction time and judgement<\/li>\n<li>Keep your eyes on the road instead of on your smartphone screen<\/li>\n<li>Be extra cautious when walking with headphones in because it\u2019s harder to hear traffic around you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>RAC\u2019s safety tips for drivers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take actions to avoid or minimise distractions while driving<\/li>\n<li>Slow down and watch for kids around schools and playgrounds, and on residential streets<\/li>\n<li>Be alert in areas with high levels of pedestrian activity (e.g. main streets and shopping areas, at pedestrian crossings, intersections and other locations where pedestrians might step out unexpectedly such as between cars or behind buses)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of pedestrians killed on Western Australian roads has nearly doubled compared to this time last year.
