{"id":8841,"date":"2019-07-15T18:48:49","date_gmt":"2019-07-15T18:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8841"},"modified":"2019-07-15T18:48:49","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T18:48:49","slug":"motor-industry-has-big-job-in-convincing-drivers-of-safety-of-self-driving-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/motor-industry-has-big-job-in-convincing-drivers-of-safety-of-self-driving-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Motor industry has \u201cbig job\u201d in convincing drivers of safety of self-driving vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seven out of ten motorists said they would not feel safe in a car that drives itself, according to a new survey.<\/p>\n<p>While the car industry invests billions into the development of self-driving cars, 70 percent of drivers questioned by road safety charity IAM RoadSmart said they would not feel safe travelling in one.<\/p>\n<p>A further 75 percent expressed some level of disagreement with the statement that the vehicle should \u201calways be in ultimate control,\u201d with 40 percent strongly against it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear from the results of our survey that the motor industry has a big job ahead in convincing drivers of the safety virtues of self-driving vehicles,\u201d said Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy and Research. \u201cWhile on paper they offer significant advantages in eliminating human error from collisions, there is a lot of confusion, misinformation and an over-abundance of terminology which has made the public distrustful of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,600 visitors to the charity\u2019s website were surveyed.<\/p>\n<p>Other results include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>90 percent of respondents agreed the driver should always be able to take over from a self-driving car should they need to<\/li>\n<li>More than 82 per cent either \u201cdisagreed\u201d or \u201cstrongly disagreed\u201d when asked if human drivers should be banned from driving on the roads once fully autonomous vehicles are widely available<\/li>\n<li>Two-thirds of respondent said they were \u201cconcerned\u201d or \u201cvery concerned\u201d about the progress towards a future where the vehicle takes over more and more functions previously controlled by the driver<\/li>\n<li>44 percent of those surveyed said they felt poorly or very poorly informed on autonomous vehicles with only 6 percent feeling very well informed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThere needs to be an industry-standard on the acronyms and product names used, and car companies need to come together, alongside government, to ensure the facts out there are clearer and easy-to-understand,\u201d added Mr Greig.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seven out of ten motorists said they would not feel safe in a car that drives itself, according to a new survey.
