{"id":8868,"date":"2019-07-25T16:42:31","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T16:42:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8868"},"modified":"2019-07-25T16:42:31","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T16:42:31","slug":"safety-at-two-lane-roundabouts-improves-over-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/safety-at-two-lane-roundabouts-improves-over-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Safety at two-lane roundabouts improves over time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The number of crashes at two-lane roundabouts reduces as drivers become more familiar with them, a new study has suggested.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\">Insurance Institute for Highway Safety<\/a> (IIHS) looked a crash trends at both single and two-lane roundabouts in Washington built between 2009 and 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found the number of crashes at two-lane roundabouts decreased on average nine percent per year, while the odds that a crash involved a serious injury decreased by nearly one-third annually.<\/p>\n<p>The number of crashes increased on average seven percent at single-lane roundabouts, and the odds of an injury fell 19 percent annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo-lane roundabouts are inherently more complex than the single-lane type,\u201d said Wen Hu, IIHS Senior Research Transportation Engineer. \u201cEven in a place like Washington, many drivers still aren\u2019t familiar with them, so it makes sense that there would be more crashes when a roundabout is first built than after it has been in place for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study said traffic engineers \u201cshouldn\u2019t rely on drivers to learn how to navigate roundabouts on their own,\u201d and said better design could help people drive through a roundabout safely the first time they encounter it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of crashes at two-lane roundabouts reduces as drivers become more familiar with them, a new study has suggested.
