{"id":8879,"date":"2019-08-02T15:42:30","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T15:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8879"},"modified":"2019-08-02T15:56:16","modified_gmt":"2019-08-02T15:56:16","slug":"drivers-with-advanced-vehicle-safety-tech-are-engaging-in-more-risky-behavior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/drivers-with-advanced-vehicle-safety-tech-are-engaging-in-more-risky-behavior\/","title":{"rendered":"Drivers with advanced vehicle safety tech are engaging in more risky behavior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Americans who drive vehicles equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) or Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) use their smartphones while driving significantly more than those without the latest vehicle technology, according to a new State Farm <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.statefarm.com\/distracted-driving-advanced-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-two percent of drivers with LKA stated they \u201cfrequently\u201d or \u201csometimes\u201d use video chat while driving compared to 20\u00a0percent who engaged in the risky behavior without the advanced technology. Half of all respondents said they would be willing to take their eyes off the road for less than five seconds to focus on another task while driving on an open highway at 65 mph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInnovations such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist are designed to make our roadways safer,\u201d said Laurel Straub, State Farm Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Research. \u201cThese systems are meant to assist drivers, not replace them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assistance, not automation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The highest level of automation available on the consumer market today is Level Two. At this level, the vehicle can control steering, braking, and accelerating in certain scenarios. Only a subset of new vehicles sold to the general public\u00a0today are equipped with Level Two\u00a0features.<\/p>\n<p>ACC, in certain situations, enables your vehicle to automatically adjust its speed to maintain a specific distance behind another vehicle. LKA, in certain situations, enables your vehicle to automatically steer within your lane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvances in vehicle technology are occurring rapidly,\u201d Straub continued. \u201cEven with these technologies in place, it\u2019s important for drivers to pay attention when behind the wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Americans who drive vehicles equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) or Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) use their smartphones while driving significantly more than those without the latest vehicle technology, according to a new State Farm survey.
