{"id":9196,"date":"2019-10-29T16:41:41","date_gmt":"2019-10-29T16:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=9196"},"modified":"2019-10-29T16:41:41","modified_gmt":"2019-10-29T16:41:41","slug":"eu-project-designs-road-features-that-nudge-drivers-to-make-safer-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/eu-project-designs-road-features-that-nudge-drivers-to-make-safer-decisions\/","title":{"rendered":"EU project designs road features that \u201cnudge\u201d drivers to make safer decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Based on the idea that traffic rules only work if people choose to obey them, a research project funded by the European Commission has created a range of \u201cnudges\u201d to encourage drivers to make safer decisions.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mebesafe.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MeBeSafe<\/a>, a \u201cnudge\u201d is an alteration of the surrounding world that aims to make it more likely for drivers to make good choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt present, the classic way of making traffic safer is to prohibit all dangerous behaviour,\u201d stated MeBeSafe. \u201cBut rules and laws can only work if people recall them and actively choose to follow them. If subjected to strict surveillance and tough enforcement, most people will likely obey \u2013 but that means we have used fear to control people. Why not give them the option to make a safe choice on their own?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>MeBeSafe\u2019s \u201cnudges\u201d include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flat stripes running across roads that cannot be felt by drivers. As they get closer and closer together on the approach to an intersection, the driver\u2019s instinctive perception is that they are going faster and faster \u2013 so they slow down.<\/li>\n<li>Rows of lamps along both sides of a road, that can light up one after another in sequence. This pattern makes it seem as though the lights are moving towards the driver. As the surroundings appear to move faster, this naturally makes drivers more prone to slow down. The lamps only turn on if a driver\u2019s speed is inappropriate.<\/li>\n<li>A nudge for installation inside the car that helps drivers spot cyclists. A green line is projected in the windscreen that seems to follow the road.
