{"id":9385,"date":"2019-12-18T20:00:24","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T20:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=9385"},"modified":"2019-12-18T20:00:24","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T20:00:24","slug":"more-than-800-miles-of-uk-roadworks-completed-or-lifted-for-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/more-than-800-miles-of-uk-roadworks-completed-or-lifted-for-christmas\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 800 miles of UK roadworks completed or lifted for Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Highways England says it is working around the clock to ensure that around 98 percent of motorways and major A roads will be roadworks-free in time for Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of roadworks will be removed from the motorway and major A-road network from 6am Friday 20 December until 12.01am on Thursday 2 January.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid busy travel times, Highways England is urging drivers to check traffic conditions before they set out and to make sure their vehicle is ready for the journey ahead. According to research, almost half of breakdowns are caused by simple mechanical problems which could be avoided with basic checks and nearly a quarter are caused by tyre problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want roadworks to spoil Christmas so we\u2019re doing everything we can to make journeys as smooth as possible; that\u2019s why we\u2019re keeping around 98 percent of the road network we manage free from roadworks,\u201d said Highways England\u2019s Customer Service Director Melanie Clarke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we\u2019re asking drivers to be prepared too. We know from experience that almost half of breakdowns can easily be avoided if motorists carry out simple vehicle checks before their journeys.<\/p>\n<p>So, before you set off, check traffic conditions, check your vehicle, and make sure you\u2019re aware of the signs and signals on motorways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Highways England urges drivers to carry out of the following checks before setting off:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fuel:<\/strong> Make sure you have enough to get to your destination<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tyres:<\/strong> Check your tyre pressure and the condition of your tyres, including the spare. Look out for cuts or wear and make sure the tyres have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, which is the legal limit<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engine oil:<\/strong> Use your dipstick to check oil before any long journey, and top up if needed &#8211; take your car back to the garage if you\u2019re topping up more than usual<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water:<\/strong> To ensure you have good visibility, always keep your screen wash topped up so you can clear debris or dirt off your windscreen<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lights:<\/strong> If your indicators, hazard lights, headlights, fog lights, reverse lights or brake lights are not functioning properly, you are putting yourself at risk.
