{"id":9680,"date":"2020-04-08T19:51:07","date_gmt":"2020-04-08T19:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=9680"},"modified":"2020-04-08T19:51:07","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T19:51:07","slug":"u-s-federal-agency-allows-states-to-permit-food-trucks-in-rest-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/u-s-federal-agency-allows-states-to-permit-food-trucks-in-rest-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Federal Agency allows states to permit food trucks in rest areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cms8.fhwa.dot.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)<\/a> has issued a notice that allows States to permit food trucks in rest areas, to help serve commercial drivers during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The FHWA says it is suspending enforcement measures under the Federal-aid Highway Program for States that choose to permit commercial food trucks to operate and sell food, in accordance with state laws, in designated federally funded Interstate Highway rest areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica\u2019s commercial truck drivers are working day and night during this pandemic to ensure critical relief supplies are being delivered to our communities,\u201d said FHWA Administrator Nicole R. Nason. \u201cI am grateful to our state transportation partners for bringing this idea to the Department and for their leadership in thinking outside the box. It is critical to make sure truck drivers continue to have access to food services while they\u2019re on the job serving our nation during these challenging times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By statute, commercial activity in the federally funded Interstate right-of-way is prohibited with limited exceptions. The FHWA Administrator has the discretion to take action to bring a State into compliance with the federal requirements. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Administrator Nason is choosing not to take remedial measures against States that allow food trucks to provide food in rest areas off the federally funded Interstate right-of-way for the duration of the national emergency declared by the President in response to the COVID-19 public health crisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has issued a notice that allows States to permit food trucks in rest areas, to help serve commercial drivers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
