{"id":9711,"date":"2020-04-28T19:01:28","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T19:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=9711"},"modified":"2020-04-28T19:01:28","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T19:01:28","slug":"londons-roads-see-dramatic-improvements-in-air-quality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/londons-roads-see-dramatic-improvements-in-air-quality\/","title":{"rendered":"London\u2019s roads see dramatic improvements in air quality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has published new evidence that shows significant improvements in air quality\u202fas a result of the\u202fhalving\u202fof traffic in London due to the coronavirus lockdown.\u202fThis is in response to\u202fenvironment ministers\u2019 call for evidence\u202fwhich will feed\u202finto\u202fthe Government\u2019s response to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, before measures to address the COVID outbreak were introduced, hourly average levels of harmful gas nitrogen dioxide NO2\u00a0at all monitoring sites\u00a0in central London had already reduced by more than a third (35 percent) compared to the same period in 2017. This follows the introduction of environmental policies including the world\u2019s first Ultra Low Emission Zone\u00a0(ULEZ).<\/p>\n<p>Since 16 March 2020 there has been an additional reduction of 27 percent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The report shows:\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There have been\u202fhuge reductions in NO2, especially at roadside sites. Central London roadside locations\u202fhave seen a fall in daily average NO2\u202fof around 40 percent. These reductions are in addition to\u00a0those\u00a0already delivered by the ULEZ.<\/li>\n<li>One of London\u2019s busiest roads, Marylebone Road, has seen a reduction in daily average NO2\u202fof 48 percent\u202fand Oxford Street has seen a reduction of 47 percent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cLondon has one of the most advanced air quality monitoring networks in the world, which has recorded how the coronavirus lockdown has dramatically\u00a0improved air quality in London. But this cleaner air should not just be temporary, as Londoners deserve clean air at all times,\u201d said the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. \u201cSo once the current emergency has passed and we start to recover, our challenge will be to eradicate air pollution permanently and ensure the gains we\u2019ve made through policies such as ULEZ continue.
