{"id":9719,"date":"2020-05-01T16:40:09","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T16:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=9719"},"modified":"2020-05-01T16:40:09","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T16:40:09","slug":"california-sees-huge-spike-in-drivers-caught-exceeding-100-mph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/california-sees-huge-spike-in-drivers-caught-exceeding-100-mph\/","title":{"rendered":"California sees huge spike in drivers caught exceeding 100 mph"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>California has seen an 87 percent rise in citations issued for speeding in excess of 100 mph during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The increase coincides with an average decline in traffic volume on state roads of approximately 35 percent compared to this time last year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dot.ca.gov\/about-caltrans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caltrans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From March 19, when the state\u2019s stay-at-home order began, to April 19, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports issuing 2,493 citations statewide compared to 1,335 during the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"https:\/\/dot.ca.gov\/about-caltrans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caltrans<\/a> has announced a joint effort with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to urge drivers in the state to slow down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcessive speed and unsafe driving threaten everyone using our highway system,\u201d said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViewing less congested roads as an invitation to drive dangerously jeopardizes the safety of construction and maintenance crews who are working to maintain reliable access to our highways when people need it most.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California has seen an 87 percent rise in citations issued for speeding in excess of 100 mph during the COVID-19 pandemic.
