{"id":9734,"date":"2020-05-11T16:15:35","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T16:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=9734"},"modified":"2020-05-11T16:15:35","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T16:15:35","slug":"number-of-u-s-road-deaths-falls-for-third-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/number-of-u-s-road-deaths-falls-for-third-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Number of U.S. road deaths falls for third year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. traffic fatalities dropped for the third year in a row, according to latest statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary estimates from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Department of Transportation\u2019s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> for 2019\u00a0showed that an estimated 36,120 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes last year &#8211; an estimated decrease of about 440, down 1.2 percent, from the reported 36,560 fatalities in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The figures are despite an increase in vehicle miles traveled of just under one percent last year and show a continuing decline in traffic related deaths since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The number of people killed decreased in most traffic safety categories including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drivers (down three percent)<\/li>\n<li>Passengers (down four percent)<\/li>\n<li>Motorcyclists (down one percent)<\/li>\n<li>Pedestrians (down two percent)<\/li>\n<li>Pedalcyclists (down three percent)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, fatalities in crashes involving at least one large truck are projected to have increased slightly by one percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafety is our top priority so this report that traffic fatalities appear to have decreased again for the third year is great news,\u201d said US Transportation Secretary Elaine L Chao.<\/p>\n<p>The early estimates can be viewed here: <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812946<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Final figures for 2019 will be available at the end of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. traffic fatalities dropped for the third year in a row, according to latest statistics.
