The US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that traffic deaths fell to record lows in 2025.
There were an estimated 36,640 traffic fatalities in 2025, a 6.7% decrease from 2024. The nation also saw its second-lowest traffic fatality rate in recorded history at 1.10 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
NHTSA estimates that fatalities decreased in 39 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico in 2025.
The National Safety Council said it was “encouraged” by the figures.
“This progress proves that change and improvement of our transportation system are not only possible, but already underway,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC CEO.
“By working together to make our roads safer, we can eliminate preventable traffic deaths in our lifetime.”
