The National Safety Council has held a new campaign to help keep teens safe behind the wheel.
The DriveitHOME program, in partnership with Honda, was held in October to provide resources to parents, caregivers and other stakeholders to help them participate in National Teen Driver Safety Week.
According to the NSC, car crashes are still the number one cause of preventable death for teens in the US, with more than 2,500 losing their lives in 2022.
The NSC said latest data available showed crashes involving young drivers (15 to 20 years old) impact people of all ages. In 2022, the number of people dying in crashes involving at least one young driver totaled more than 5,000.
The campaign offered tips to help parents and caregivers get involved to protect their new drivers.
âNo young person should ever lose their life on our roadways, and no parent should ever lose their child,â said Mark Chung, executive vice president of safety leadership and advocacy.
âParental involvement on a teenâs driving journey is key to ensuring they have the knowledge and skills to navigate our roadways safely. NSC is proud to support parents and caregivers with the tools they need to make their teens safe drivers not just today, but for a lifetime.â
