The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reminding everyone to check for open safety recalls on their vehicles and equipment after a near record number of recalls in 2024.

There were 1,073 vehicle and equipment safety recalls last year, according to the NHTSA. More than 29.3 million vehicles were recalled, along with more than 600,000 car seats and 1.3 million tires.

Motorists can check for recalls on NHTSA’s website and recall repairs are free at vehicle manufacturer’s dealership.

The NHTSA said despite recall notices and public warnings, many vehicles and vehicle equipment are never repaired and offered the following advice on how to check for recalls.

  • Use NHTSA’s Recalls Lookup Tool to check your vehicle identification number, license plate number, or vehicle equipment for any open recalls.
  • Download NHTSA’s SaferCar app and let it check automatically for you.
  • If your vehicle does have a recall, call your automaker’s local dealer to schedule the free recall repair.
  • Follow any instructions from the automaker, including any “do not drive” or “park outside” warnings.
  • Sign up for email notifications for future safety recalls.
  • If you think your vehicle may have a safety defect that isn’t part of a current recall, contact NHTSA online or call the agency’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236, Monday through Friday, 8am to 8pm Eastern.
