Hyderabad Traffic Police is introducing India’s first penalty point system for traffic violations.
Beginning August 1, 2017, any driver caught violating traffic laws will received penalty points. Offenders will have their driving license suspended for one year if they reach 12 points within a period of 24 months. A driver who subsequently accrues an additional 12 points will have their license suspended for two years; further repetition will result in the driver having their license suspended for three years.
Drivers with learner’s licenses can only accrue up to five points before their licenses are cancelled. The holder will be eligible for re-issue upon production of a certificate from a recognized driving school.
Hyderabad Traffic Police stated: “The penalty point system is being introduced for the first time in India to inculcate self-discipline among commuters with a view to transform Hyderabad city into a safe place for commuting and delightful place for driving.”
