Roadworks are not an unusual sight for most drivers, but they can still sometimes be a cause for concern. Some drivers find travelling through roadworks stressful, especially if they result in a delayed journey. It is important to deal with roadworks correctly to avoid becoming stressed or irritated and to avoid putting yourself and others at risk.
eDriving Fleet has put together a list of top 10 good practice tips for driving through roadworks to help drivers deal with the situation appropriately.
- Plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey if know the route will involve roadworks.
- Keep to the posted speed limit or below if more suitable for the conditions.
- Look out for signs well in advance and get into the correct lane in good time. Avoid switching at the last moment to cut down on queuing.
- Remain focused on the road ahead – not at what is going on with the roadworks.
- Keep checking mirrors to remain aware of what others are doing around you.
- Be alert for works traffic leaving or entering the road – look out for workers too.
- Leave a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front.
- Observe all signs as you pass through roadworks.
- Be aware of the road surface; it may change as you pass through roadworks and you may need to slow down even more.
- Remain calm, regardless of how long it takes to pass through the roadworks. Remember that getting stressed or panicking about being late will NOT help you get through roadworks any quicker.Â
Remember to take regular breaks from driving, even if you haven’t travelled as far as you would have liked because of roadworks or other hold-ups. Take a break of at least 15 minutes for every two hours of driving.
And remember, roadworks are there for a reason – to improve roads for future journeys.Â
