No U.S. state goes far enough to protect its residents from leading causes of preventable deaths and injuries, according to a new National Safety Council (NSC) report.

The State of Safety assesses how well Americans are protected from risk in three categories: road safety, home and community safety, and workplace safety.

The report ranks the top five states for road safety as Illinois, Louisiana, Washington, D.C., Delaware and Maine. Wyoming, Arizona, Missouri, South Dakota and Montana are ranked the lowest.

As well as individual category ratings, the report also provides overall safety ratings for each state, with no state earning an overall ‘A’.

The report wraps up National Safety Month, observed each June to draw attention to eliminating preventable deaths.
