Data from the Department for Transport shows 63 percent of all vehicles on the road at 4am are driving too fast, with Sunday the most likely day for motorists to go over the limit.

Figures also revealed 47 percent of drivers have been caught speeding, with two-thirds admitting to doing it occasionally and five percent admitting to speeding every time they get behind the wheel.

The Government data, acquired by price comparison website MoneySuperMarket, found the  majority of drivers exceed the speed limit on roads with a 20mph restriction (86 percent), while less than half (46 percent) go over the 70mph speed limit on motorways, and only nine percent of drivers go above the legal limit of 60mph on single carriageways.

However, when MoneySuperMarket surveyed motorists on how much they speed on different types of roads, drivers admitted to speeding most on motorways and dual carriageways – in contrast to the government statistics.

Nearly three quarters of respondents (71 percent) admitted to exceeding the speed limit on motorways, while 57 percent said they did so on 20mph roads.

“The discrepancies between these results and the government figures suggests that drivers may not be as aware of their speed as they think, which is even more reason to pay close attention on the roads,” said a spokesperson for the comparison website.
