Preliminary figures have revealed speed related crashes claimed more than 100 lives in Minnesota last year.

Now nearly 300 law-enforcement agencies from around the state are joining together in a bid to stop dangerous and deadly speeding as part of a new high visibility campaign which launched in May and runs through to September 7.

“For people who think speeding is no big deal, emergency responders will tell you a far different story of what they see a crash scene,” said Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety Director Mike Hanson.

“If you like to speed, think of this enforcement as a life-saving intervention. Now is your chance to stop this dangerous behaviour before someone gets hurt. Our law enforcement partners are out there ready to stop deadly driving.”

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, more traffic fatalities occur during the warmer months. The organization said clear roads made it more tempting for drivers to speed and focus less on driving conditions.

The new campaign is coordinated by the OTS using funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
