As October marks National Pedestrian Safety Month, new data has revealed 21 percent of Florida road deaths last year involved pedestrians.
Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), its division of the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), and public safety partners across the state, have joined forces this month to remind drivers and pedestrians that staying safe on Floridaâs roadways is a shared responsibility.
FLHSMV and partners are sharing tips and educational information throughout the month to help keep motorists and pedestrians safe.
âLast year, we lost more than 700 Floridians â our friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers â in senseless and preventable pedestrian-involved crashes,â said FLHSMV Executive Director, Terry L. Rhodes.
âPedestrian safety is not a one-way street â itâs the responsibility of all road users, and itâs crucial that motorists and pedestrians alike stay alert and look out for one anotherâs safety.â
In 2020, there were 8,107 crashes involving a pedestrian in Florida, resulting in 712 fatalities â 21 percent of all traffic fatalities.
