Paul Atchley, PhD, eDriving’s Brain Scientist Advisor, recently wrote an article for Fleet Management Weekly about the addictive elements built into phones by Silicon Valley and how fleet managers can help drivers overcome the compulsion to use their phones behind the wheel.

In the article, Dr. Atchley explains how it can be helpful for fleet managers to view phones as “substance delivery systems”. He also provides a strategy to help fleet managers address drivers’ addiction to their phones to help reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities.

The advice provided by Dr. Atchley includes setting up a policy that bans the use of devices, supported by – and applicable to – leadership. He also explains how to support the policy with education and how to monitor and enforce the rules.
