The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has reduced the maximum weight of two-wheeler helmets by 300 grams, according to a report in The Times of India.

Currently, the maximum permitted weight is 1.5 kg. From January 15 2019, the maximum weight will be 1.2 kg. Ventilation holes must also be included.

The Times of India report states that the road transport ministry will mandate BIS certification for all helmet manufacturers. A spokesperson said this would end the “menace” of low-quality helmets.
