Drivers in Florida are being reminded to travel safely and never drive impaired as the holiday season approaches.

Throughout November and December The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) will be educating Floridians and visitors on safe traveling behaviors such as never driving impaired, focusing on driving, and registering Emergency Contact Information (ECI), as part of its Safe Holiday Travel campaign.

There will also be a focus on informing consumers of their rights and responsibilities when it comes to buying and selling a vehicle.

“Whether you are traveling on the road, or buying a vehicle to get on the road, safety should always be priority number one,” said FLHSMV Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes.

FLHSMV figures show in 2018 there were 9,896 crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period with 79 fatalities and 9,983 crashes during the Christmas and New Year period, resulting in 111 fatalities. Alcohol or drugs was a factor in 405 crashes.

FLHSMV is partnering with the Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Sheriffs Association, Florida Police Chiefs Association, and AAA – The Auto Club Group on the campaign.
