An EU-funded project to develop a system allowing a vehicle to switch between human driver and vehicle automation is taking shape.

The MEDIATOR project, which is coordinated by SWOV, the Institute for Road Safety Research in the Netherlands, changes between the two based on who is fittest to drive.

The system, which checks for driver distraction, fatigue and comfort, uses a mixture of camera data and physiological measurements to inform a decision on whether human driver or automation is the safest option.

The development of the driver state component is a joint effort between Autoliv, Ben-Gurion University, Chemnitz University of Technology, Cygnify, Delft University of Technology, FCA, SWOV, Veoneer and VTI.

MEDIATOR has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
