Maruti Suzuki India has teamed up with Microsoft Research India to develop smartphone-based technology for testing driver’s license applicants.

The technology – HAMS (Harnessing Automobile for Safety) – is being used at the Automated Driving Test Centre (ADTC), Dehradunm in association with the Transport Department, Government of Uttarakhand.

Advanced video analytic technology checks the driving skills of the applicants and replaces manual assessment of candidates. The system is expected to be rolled out across states to other centres.

The average pass rate now stands at 54 percent, compared to over 90 percent in the earlier manual testing mode. The test aims to bring transparency and improve road safety.
