The government is proposing a law change to make ABS compulsory for new motorcycles over 125cc in New Zealand.

If approved, the law change would apply to all new-model new motorcycles entering the fleet from 1 November 2019. Current-model new motorcycles and imported used motorcycles entering the fleet would be required to have ABS from 1 November 2021.

Several exceptions are proposed for classic and collectable motorcycles and there are no requirements for ABS to be retrofitted to existing motorcycles.

The Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council recommended the change to government following its 2018 Motorcycle Safety Summit.

A consultation is currently taking place and is open until 5pm Friday 26 April 2019.
