The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced its latest list of new vehicles that will be tested for the agency’s 5-Star Safety Ratings program.

The 2022 models represent approximately 86 percent of the new vehicle fleet, helping consumers make purchasing decisions about the vehicles that fit the needs of their families.

“NHTSA’s rigorous testing system enables people to make informed safety decisions when it comes to purchasing a vehicle,” said Dr Steven Cliff, NHTSA’s Acting Administrator.

“With nine electric vehicle models on this year’s testing list, NHTSA will be able to provide even more safety information about the vehicles in demand.”

NHTSA crash tests new vehicles and rates them on how well they protect occupants in frontal, side, and rollover crashes. Results from these tests are compiled into a rating of one to five stars, with five stars being the highest rating.

NHTSA has also announced the list of vehicles it will test to verify the performance of certain advanced driver assistance systems. The technologies that will be evaluated are lane departure warning, forward collision warning, crash imminent braking, and dynamic brake support.

The full lists can be viewed on the NHTSA website.
