More than two-thirds of road fatalities in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, occur on rural roads. Now, a campaign has been launched urging drivers to slow down to save lives.

Rural Road Safety Month is reminding drivers to do the right thing behind the wheel as latest figures reveal more than 180 people have died in crashes in NSW this year – 115 of them on country roads.

Speeding remains the biggest contributor to road fatalities, accounting for 39 percent of fatalities last year.

“Every time you get behind the wheel, the choices we make can have fatal consequences,” said Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole.

“Every life lost or serious injury suffered represents a family, a friend and a community that is impacted.”

Rural Road Safety Month is an initiative of the Australian Road Safety Foundation.
