Mentor for Families: From Fleet Solution to Consumer Necessity

eDriving uses its 25+ years of experience working with fleets to improve the attitudes and behaviors of all drivers

eDriving has released the first, patented, “closed loop” smartphone telematics solution for fleet drivers – MentorSM by eDriving. For more than 25 years eDriving FLEET has worked with companies including Johnson & Johnson, GSK, and Nestlé, and has pioneered what is known as a “closed loop” approach to driver training. It’s an approach that works, with organizations reporting up to 67% reduction in collisions.

Now, eDriving has paired this patented approach with the latest in smartphone technology to create Mentor for Families, an app designed to help all drivers make better decisions behind the wheel.

What does “closed loop” mean?
eDriving FLEET has helped companies around the world establish road safety cultures, make better vehicle choices, identify at-risk drivers, and provide personalized training, thereby creating an ongoing “circle” of intervention. That’s what closed loop means: a continuous cycle of driver improvement.

eDriving’s original closed loop of activity involves the following stages:

1. Safety Culture
Educating companies so they understand the need for a strong safety culture, commit to driving safely, and choose safer vehicles.

2. Risk Assessment
Assessing journeys, vehicles, and drivers to create individual risk profiles.

3. Scoring
Reviewing a number of factors—such as license checks, collision data, and driver monitoring—to “score” an individual’s driving history and performance.

4. Training
Ongoing training to help drivers maintain and improve skills.

5. Benchmarking
Enabling employees to see how their skills stack up to those of peers, and allowing companies to compare their road safety performance data with other organizations.

Did you know that 94% of road incidents are caused by driver decisions and attitudes behind the wheel? This tells us that 94% of road incidents could be prevented if all drivers made the correct decisions and had the right attitude every time they drove. With the closed loop approach, every organization can help make that happen.

The closed loop, reinvented for the modern driver
Technology has presented an incredible opportunity to evolve the closed loop approach. The resulting smartphone app, Mentor for Families by eDriving, comes complete with the same behavioral change techniques used successfully in areas like fitness and weight loss. Yes, think Fitbit and Weight Watchers! Apps like these have proven highly successful at motivating users by employing a “competitive” approach and encouraging users to compare their own achievements to those of family and friends.

Mentor employs a similar approach, giving drivers a score after every trip and on a weekly basis, providing a leaderboard for score comparisons and in-app “micro learning” modules to help drivers improve their behind-the-wheel skills.Mentor for Families

A partnership with data science pioneer, FICO®
Ninety percent of top lenders use FICO® Scores to help them make billions of credit-related decisions every year. eDriving has partnered with FICO® to develop the FICO® Safe Driving Score. Just as credit scoring gives an indication of a person’s credit history and borrowing risk, the FICO® Safe Driving Score provides an insight into a person’s driving performance and road risk by monitoring and assessing a user’s trip-by-trip driving performance.

The goal is for drivers to use this score to understand the risks they face, how those factors affect their safety, and what they can do to reduce their risk of collisions.

“So, there’s a huge gap between how good drivers think they are, and how good they actually are. New tracking devices may be just the intervention we need to encourage and reinforce behavioral shifts and create new norms.” – Celia Stokes, CEO, eDriving
